Educator Biography

Harmony Shrewsbury graduated with honors from UCLA's competitive Teacher Education Program with a Masters in Urban Education, and has since moved to the Bay Area to further her career. She has 6 years of experience in secondary classrooms, and is credentialed in both Mathematics and English Language Arts. Harmony specializes in teaching Foundational Mathematics, and has extensive experience with college-bound students as well as clients with special learning needs.

Harmony enjoys teaching adults and teens, and tailors sessions to each individual's learning style. She emphasizes strong conceptual understandings (why things work) as well as procedural fluency (accurately solving problems). For clients who struggle with abstract thinking, she employs a number of alternative methods (algebra tiles, area models) that enables them to excel in "traditional," lecture-based classrooms.

Harmony has spent the last 2 years working as a reading and math interventionist in an elementary school. She's able to teach letters, reading and phonics to K-3, and K-6 math as well.

Subjects

Harmony provides tutoring for the following subjects:

- Pre-Algebra, Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, Pre-Calculus

- Writing, Reading Comprehension

- SAT tutoring

- CSET, CBEST, GED test prep

- College admission essay writing

- Elementary reading, math, phonics, reading comprehension, etc.

Study Skills Instruction

Often, students are instructed to "study" in school - but are never taught how to study, or which methods of studying are most effective. In addition, some study methods may be better suited to certain subjects. Harmony teaches clients to utilize research-backed strategies for retaining and sorting information, and tailors the methods to each individual's learning style.

Stress Management Instruction

Greater competition for access to college means that students feel increasingly stressed, and so instruction in stress-management techniques can help students reach their full potential. Harmony teaches students to utilize positive-thinking, mantras, breathing exercises, and "brain-breaks" to ensure their success.

The Future of College Entrance Exams

"Although UC decision-makers point to the unfairness of the SAT and ACT for poor, black, and Latino/a students, it's unclear whether future applicants will benefit from not reporting SAT/ACT scores.

Instead, applicants might just have more tests to take. At present, the UC system plans to replace one standardized test with another and will use the next few years to explore creating an original admissions test."

How The Coronavirus Has Upended College Admissions

National Public Radio (NPR)

"As stressful as it always is for students applying to college, this year it's all that — and then some — for the admissions officials trying to decide whether to admit them. Because of the pandemic, many students will be applying without standardized test scores and several other metrics admissions officers at selective schools have long relied on, leaving colleges scrambling to figure out what else they might consider instead."
